I was in Dubai 3 times in a space of 5 weeks ...oct/nov 2007 ! on business actually. But one memorable part during my short stay on those occassions I did manage to get a picture of the Dubai Creek out from my hotel window. Anyway I managed to take a stroll after dinner one night and saw the "happenings" - I saw many arabian dhows leisurely plying the creek with its dinner clients, dhows laden with various types of goods awaiting daylight before the goods are off loaded and also abras ( small boats ) with passengers crossing the creek from the Diera Dubai side to Bur Dubai side of the creek. A brochure in my hotel mentioned that the creek is about 9 miles long. Historically along the banks of the Dubai Creek was ( and still is ) a thriving commercial area with traders coming and going as far as East Africa and India. Now, Dubai is a modern city with its skyscrapers and commercial/residential buildings. Never in my life have I seen so many cranes in a location ! yes, it is in Dubai. If you have a spare crane, guaranteed you can sell it in Dubai. Apparently, they are looking for more cranes !
On another note, the word "creek" is commonly referred to as a stream, a brook and in some cases creeks or brooks tend to dry up in summer. This Dubai Creek is a tidal water channel or inlet which was deepened I guess, and it played a significant role for Dubai...by the way, its clean !
